Revelation 20:7-15, Insurrection and Salvation

Insurrection: Satan is released after the Millennium for a short time. Without skipping a beat, “the dragon of old” goes right back to deceiving the world toward rebellion (Rev. 20:7-8). All the unregenerate who enjoyed Jesus’ good provision will believe the evil one and join the worldwide insurrection. Even as the Jews rejected Jesus the healer, teacher, and provider, and called for His death, so these who tasted the kindness of the Lord for a thousand years will wage war. This reveals the wickedness of men’s hearts: The unregenerate will distrust the Lord and follow the lie that God is holding out on us. Just as Eve fell for the lie (Gen. 3:6), so will they. Only the regenerate will trust in the Lord to the end (1 Pet. 1:5, 7). We believe because the Father marked us out for salvation[1] and gave us the gift of faith (Eph. 2:5, 8; James 1:17; 1 Pet. 1:3, 23).

Salvation: After the Millennium will come the final judgment day. All creation will flee before Jesus’ judgment throne (Rev. 20:11). There, everyone will be judged according to their deeds recorded in the books,[2] but there is one happy exception: All whose names are in the book of life escape that judgment (Rev. 20:15). The owner of that book, the Lamb (Rev. 13:8), has paid for their sins (Rev. 5:9; 7:14; 12:11) and there is no double jeopardy with God.[3] On that day, only one thing will matter: whether we belong to the Lamb. All who belong to Christ depend on Him, hear his voice, and follow Him (John 10:27; Rev. 14:4). All else will perish. We follow the Lamb and lead others to do the same.

[3] Double jeopardy refers to the legal principle (5th amendment) that no one can be punished twice for a given crime. Once Jesus has paid for sins, God does not require payment for them again. Once paid always paid.
