John the Baptist came like one who was similar to Elijah. He lived in the wilderness and had a message for everyone, which was to repent, because the kingdom of heaven was at hand. This message was to tell people that they need to turn away from sin and instead turn to follow God. By getting rid of sin that they can be ready in their hearts to believe and follow Jesus. John was clear, the One that was coming is God and He will be the one to save everyone that believes and judge everyone that rejects Him. This coming Lord is none other than Jesus.
