Who Jesus is in His deity is truly astounding. He will raise everyone from the dead at the final resurrection and He will judge each one with full human understanding and with divine justice and based on each person’s deeds. Before those final days arrive, however, He offers salvation to all who would listen to and believe in Him.

What must one know to be saved? Some wish to answer this with a minimalistic approach to salvation. But the Scriptures’ answer isn’t minimalistic. Instead, the knowledge of salvation is to truly know God as He revealed Himself in His incarnate Son as recorded for us in Scripture. And God gave this in a way that even children can understand. Jesus has the power to raise the dead. But what will happen thereafter? Jesus has an explanation for the afterlife, and in this verse, Jesus begins to unfold the truth about eternal life: who will have it, and how they will possess it even in this life? He also begins to explain judgment as to who will escape it.

Death is irreversible, except that God can do the impossible. God can raise the dead, and Jesus claims that He has this divine authority to give life to the dead. To this, He also adds He has the authority—from the Father—to render judgment upon all men. These are the greater works that demonstrate His divine equality with the Father.
