Psalm 127:1, Without the LORD, Frustration!

This familiar psalm reminds us that the ultimate worker and provider in all our endeavors is the LORD. While the natural principle of cause and effect is indeed taught in Scripture, this psalm shows us that that principle must always be accompanied by the understanding that the LORD is the crucial provider in all our affairs. Whether it's our homes or the house of God, our greatest need is the LORD’s provision. In this unique psalm of Solomon, the Holy Spirit teaches us that human strength and ingenuity alone do not guarantee success. It is the LORD and His provision that ensure true success. May we learn to pray, depend on the LORD, and carry out His work with pure hearts.

Revelation 7:1-14 The Protection of God's People

Revelation 7 shows that the wrath of the Lamb will be poured out on those who dwell on the earth, not upon Jesus’ own beloved people. John is shown two groups that will stand despite the intense judgments to come and contrary to the unbelievers’ outcry (6:17): the 144K Israelites and the raptured Gentile church of God. This sermon is part one of two sermons on Revelation 7 on the important topic of the rapture and its implications.

Micah 5:2-4 The Messianic Message of Micah

Micah prophesied of the Messiah that He is the LORD God and that He is the shepherd over His people. This is the true message of Christmas that woos us to worship Christ, to love, honor, and serve Him. May we ponder deeply the wonder of Christmas, that the LORD, the eternal God, came from heaven in human flesh, born in Bethlehem, born of a woman, in the person of Jesus, to seek and save that which was lost and to shepherd all His elect who repent and trust in Him, to guide them away from sin and in the pathway of sanctification all the way home to glory.

Psalm 37 - God: Your only refuge!

Psalm 37 is a Psalm written by Israel’s greatest king, king David. It reveals only two possibilities for the end of a person’s life. The wicked will be cut off by God’s judgment. Although they prosper abundantly in the present, their end is certain. They are not satisfied with prosperity, so they seek to destroy the righteous. Yet, the righteous seek refuge in the LORD. A repeated refrain in the Psalm is, “do not fret.” The path for settling your soul is through seeking refuge in God. The Christian’s heart is encouraged through this revelation of God, who sustains the righteous. Moreover, the Psalm directs Christians to trust, with great hope, in the LORD. The result is that they can progress through life’s difficulties and into eternity because of the salvation of God. He truly delivers those who seek refuge in Him from evildoers.

Revelation 4-6, The Reign of God

The revelation of the future is given from the perspective of heaven. God reigns as the supreme ruler and deity who is enthroned and worshipped in heaven. What is true in heaven becomes the reality on earth as the revelation of the future unfolds. This revelation commences with Jesus breaking open the seals and shows the backdrop against which the judgments of God will come: ordinary and natural suffering in the fallen world and the persecution of Christians and their holy prayer for justice. In response to their prayer, divine wrath is poured out upon the world (with the seventh seal [8:1] and the trumpet and bowl judgments that ensue). All of this affirms the resounding biblical call to be ready for Christ. He is indeed coming quickly. May we be dressed in readiness and keep our lamps lit.

1 Samuel 1:19-2:1, God Is Our Fortress (Part 2)

The example of Hannah is a breath of fresh air amid our culture of selfish ambition, self-fulfillment, and self-worth. This woman of God exhibits what true godliness is. She depends on the Lord, she offers herself to the Lord in humble submission to His will with integrity and with the fear of the Lord, and she worships the Lord for He is her true joy, strength, and confidence.

1 Samuel 1:1-11, God Is Our Fortress

On this Mother’s Day, we begin a study of one woman of God who faced suffering and distress with dependence on the LORD, Yahweh, the sovereign and omnipotent God (“the LORD of hosts”). She prays to Him and wholeheartedly submits her life under His will. She also praises and hopes in the LORD her God. May the Lord encourage the women of our church to follow in the footsteps of this woman of God and depend on the Lord for all the resources that they need for life and godliness.

John 13:12-17, Foundations for Christlike Service (Part 2)

Jesus shows us that His self-abasement removes every excuse for not serving. Jesus’ humility and service demand that we serve in the like fashion. He who is so much greater than us has humbled Himself. How can we ever say we are too dignified to perform the lowly thing as Jesus did? We have been served so well by our Lord and Teacher. How can we ever say we will receive from His blessing and not extend the same to others? We, thus, have an obligation to serve. We also have a calling to imitate. Christ gave Himself as an example of service so that we would follow it. This is our calling and objective in life, to conform to the image of Christ. Lastly, Jesus calls us to take action and adopt this mentality of humility and servanthood as the pattern for our lifestyle. These are the foundations for Christlike service. May the Holy Spirit evermore conform us to Christ and His likeness and make us into humble servants like Him.

John 13:12-17, Foundations for Christlike Service

Jesus drew a second lesson from His act of footwashing, namely, the lesson on humble service. Four foundations/principles for christlike service emerges out of Jesus’ words: 1) a proper view of Jesus as Teacher and Lord (Respect), 2) obligation to humble service (Obligation), 3) imitation to Christ as the will of God (Imitation), and 4) action as the intent of Jesus’ lesson (Action). Humble service is difficult, but with the foundations the Lord lays down for us, we are driven to humble ourselves and do the hard thing in doing good unto others. May the Lord make us into humble servants in the likeness to Christ.

Acts 2:22-39, The Undeniable Resurrection of Jesus as the Christ

On this Resurrection Sunday, we examine the very first preaching of the resurrection of Jesus as the Messiah which took place on Pentecost day in Acts 2. In that sermon, Simon Peter powerfully demonstrates the resurrection of Jesus as the Christ from the four testimonies of God, Scripture, witnesses, and the Holy Spirit. Most astonishingly, Peter extends the living testimony of the Holy Spirit well beyond his own audience in Jerusalem in that setting, to all whom the Lord will call to Himself (v 39). Peter concludes his sermon with the call of the gospel unto repentance, baptism, forgiveness of sins, and the Holy Spirit.

John 13:6-11, The Continued Cleansing of Sin

What does foot-washing signify? How is the believer who is completely clean to be washed still? In this sermon, we examine the biblical doctrine of salvation, namely, the doctrines of justification, sanctification, and glorification. We zero in on the import of the second of these. While the justified believer does not wallow in sin, issues of sin are still present because he is not yet glorified and is being sanctified. In the process of sanctification, the continued cleansing of sin is necessary, demands confession, and results in repentance and transformation by the Holy Spirit.

John 13:6-11, The Complete Cleansing of Sin

Can a sinner be completely clean in the sight of God? Can he truly be an heir together with Christ? Jesus’ answer to both of these question is an absolute yes! Jesus Himself affirms that His true disciples are completely cleansed by Him and that they have a part/share with Him in His heavenly inheritance before the Father. This is the assurance of justification and inheritance to all who are true disciples of Christ.
