Joshua calls the people of Israel to speak to them at the end of his life. In the messages, he reminds the people to be firm in holding to God’s law, as they remain amongst many other nations that worship false gods. He tells the people to not associate with these nations, for if they do, God will not drive them out, and they will become a snare and trap to the Israelites. After reviewing the history of Israel, Joshua tells the people to fear the LORD and serve Him alone. To serve God, they must put away any other idols. Joshua and the people make a covenant which he records in the book of law; Israel does serve the LORD for the life of Joshua and other elders who had seen and known God’s deeds.
