This lesson is presented in the context of Christmas, in the joy of celebrating Jesus’ birth.
The Word, as John writes, is someone who has existed since the beginning; one who was with God and was God. Through the rest of John, we see that this is God the Son who John focuses on. The Word is also the Creator, which demonstrates why Jesus is also shown repeatedly to have power over creation. And in Him, the Son of God, is life - the true reason for the joy of Christmas, when the Son of God enters into His creation to share this with those in need. He is the light that shines in the darkness!
