Jonathan becomes a friend of David because of their common love for God. Jonathan makes a promise to David, showing his support for David’s future as king instead of seeking his own gain. David continues to serve King Saul, but the success and praise of David makes king Saul afraid. He makes multiple attempts at David’s life, getting others involved to pursue David. In the midst of this, God’s protection is given to David through Jonathan who continues to be loyal to his word. Jonathan even faces his father’s anger and spear to defend David - but eventually, David has to leave to escape Saul’s persistent chasing.
