A messenger delivers the report that king Saul has died, along with Jonathan and many other Israelites. This man also claims to have been the one to have killed Saul, providing the king’s crown and bracelet as evidence. David mourns greatly, and also punishes this man for killing God’s anointed. David writes a lament of remembrance and has it taught to the people. David listens to God, who brings him to the city of Hebron where he is anointed king of Judah. David honors the men who buried king Saul.
