Genesis 50:15-20, Divine Sovereignty and Human ...

Joseph’s declaration in Gen. 50:20 reveals the breathtaking reality of concurrence. At the same time that men intend evil with their action, God intends good with that very action. The intentions reveal to us the two well-established and irrefutable doctrines of sovereignty and human responsibility. These two doctrines hold true to the farther extent of creation, including the fall of Satan, his presence in Eden, and the fall of man. All that has transpired perfectly accords with the eternal purpose of God. History is indeed the unfolding of the plan of God.

John 17:22-26, For Love and Glory (Part-2)

Jesus prays regarding two kinds of glory. He speaks of glory in the present age for His people’s sanctification. God’s elect grow in conformity to Him as they behold His glory in Christ. Jesus also prays for future glory, that His people behold His full, divine, eternal glory in heaven. We are to behold the glory of God now for our sanctification and the glory of God in the future for our glorification.

John 17:22-26, For Love and Glory

Jesus concludes His prayer with love and glory. Love is the focus of this sermon. The Lord prays that we would come to experientially know (taste) of the Father’s special love. This is the special love of the Father like His love toward His only begotten Son. Like that love, the Father loved His elect from eternity past and “in love predestined us to adoption as sons.” This is the love which Jesus wants us to savor. May the Holy Spirit reveal to us more and more of this awesome love of God.

Jesus’ prayer reflects the heart of God that seeks salvation blessing for the world. Jesus sees the church as the vehicle by which the elect of God worldwide will come to faith in Him unto salvation. In this first installment on a two part sermon, we explore the facets of the church, our mission, our godliness, and the special love of God toward the elect (next sermon).

John 17:14-19, A Dangerous Mission

Jesus’ prayer for His disciples is undergirded by the reality of a dangerous mission. He knows we will be hated by the world and targeted by the Devil. As such, we will need divine protection. Hence, He prays, “Keep them from the evil one.” Moreover, we will need to live holy lives if we are to make any meaningful impact for the gospel that reconciles and restored sinners to the holy and righteous Father. Our own lives would have to be sanctified in order for us to be useful to the Lord in leading the rest of His elect to this salvation. Therefore, the Lord prays, “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.” The word of God that has regenerated us is the same word that will sanctify our lives. May the Holy Spirit through His word evermore conform us to Christ that we would be like Him on earth and make disciples for His honor and glory.

Rom. 3:10-18, The Gospel (Part 2)

How has man responded to the good and holy God? The bible’s answer is sin. Even though God had only done him good, man turned his back on God and distrusted and disobeyed Him. How did the first man sin against God? How does man sin against God today? How pervasive is in among mankind? These are the questions addressed in this next study of the gospel message. Praise God that He did not respond to man in kind but sent the Savior!

2 Tim. 3:14-17, The Gospel

2 Tim. 3:15 explains that Scripture is able to give wisdom unto salvation through faith in Christ. The good news (“the gospel”) of Jesus Christ is the wisdom found in Scripture which every sinner must believe in order to be saved. In this first installment on the gospel, we answer biblically the first two foundational questions regarding God. “Who created the world?” and “What is God’s character like?” This is the first of four part series on the gospel questions and answers (catechism).

1 Pet. 1:14-19, Five Motivations for Holy Living

Peter gives us a strong encouragement toward Christian holiness which is marked by separation from sin, imitation to God and permeation of this reality in every aspect of our lives. Peter points out in this passage five motivations for holy living: filiation (we are new covenant children of God who obey the Lord from a changed heart), extinction (our former life should never be brought into the present), revelation (this duty of the people of God has been written down by God in Scripture), evaluation (God evaluates our lives with objective and impartial judgment), and calculation (Christ paid the infinite price of ransom for our redemption). May the Lord help us to have the wisdom of the Word of God to daily pursue a life of holiness.

John 8:12, The Light of the World

Jesus is relentless in His purpose to save souls. He has called people to Himself before (7:37-38) and we read of no one who came to Him, but He doesn’t give up. Instead, He continues on with another invitation for sinners to follow Him. He is the light of the world who rescues men from darkness and puts His light of life to reside within them. In this sermon, we also work through the textual critical issue regarding the intervening passage (7:53-8:11), and that the Bible is reliable and that God has not allowed His truth to be lost through the manual copying of manuscripts.

John 7:40-52, Come to Christ (Part 3)

Christ’s call for all is that they come to Him. Souls apart from Christ are thirsty and dry. Their only source of spiritual refreshment is to come to Christ and to be transformed by the work of the Holy Spirit (7:38-39). While Christ had made the public call loud and clear, those in the temple did not take heed. We read of no one that they came to Christ. How tragic! In this installment, we consider the remaining four groups marked by their own reaction (or the lack thereof) to Christ’s salvation invitation. Oh how all must come to Christ.

Hebrews 10:19-27, Three Treasures in Christ (Part 4)

In this final study of this text (vv. 26-27, we consider the severe warning against conscious unrepentance. The dangers of such response (non-response) to the truth of God is to die with no forgiveness of sins and to have God as one’s enemy. This section of Scripture brings up two very important questions. Is this Scripture saying that one can lose their salvation? How about a person who is weak and without self-control, what are they to do to avoid conscious unrepentance? Listen to learn more.
