Pilate handed over Jesus to be crucified. The soldiers take Him away, beat Him, spit on Him, and mock Him by placing a crown of thorns on Him while bowing before Him. They then lead Him to Golgotha where they crucify Him. King Jesus, the sinless Son of God, hangs on a cross between two robbers. An inscription of the charge against Him reads “the King of the Jews”—a charge that nobody believes. The people and the priests who pass by continue to mock Him, challenging the Savior to save Himself, but Jesus wasn’t there to save Himself. With a loud cry, bearing the entirety of the Father’s wrath against our sin, Jesus dies. God tears the veil in the temple in two, as the blood of Christ gives sinful man access to holy God once for all. A centurion who stands before the cross witnessing Christ’s death responds in the way that all people should: “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
